Context
Gmail compared to European email providers
Gmail is offered free of charge because it forms part of Alphabet's advertising-funded business model. For years Google scanned email content algorithmically to refine advertising profiles; automated content scanning for ad targeting was officially discontinued in 2017, but metadata such as sender, recipient, subject line and calendar data continue to be processed and linked with other Google services.
As a US company, Google is subject to the CLOUD Act. US authorities can compel the disclosure of data even when it is stored on servers inside the European Union. The Schrems II ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union (2020) found that US surveillance laws such as FISA Section 702 conflict with the GDPR, raising fundamental questions about the legal framework under which US companies such as Google operate. Using Gmail in a commercial context requires additional technical and contractual safeguards for GDPR compliance.
Gmail does not provide end-to-end encryption. Messages are encrypted in transit (TLS) but rest on Google's servers in plaintext and can be processed by Google itself and, under US law, by authorities. European providers such as Proton Mail, Tuta and Mailfence use zero-knowledge architectures, where the provider cannot read the content itself.
European email services are typically funded by subscriptions rather than advertising. The provider's business model therefore does not depend on analysing communication. For users working with sensitive data (journalism, legal advice, healthcare, public sector), this distinction has regulatory and practical relevance.
