Frequently asked questions about Proton Mail

What is Proton Mail and what is it used for? +

Proton Mail is an end-to-end encrypted email service from Swiss Proton AG, based in Geneva, founded in 2014 at CERN. The platform offers PhishGuard for phishing detection, Hide-My-Email aliases, tracker blocker, password-protected messages to non-Proton recipients, and a newsletter manager. Apps are available for web, Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. According to the provider, Proton Mail is among the largest encrypted email services worldwide with over 100 million users.

Does Proton Mail run on European infrastructure? +

Proton operates its own hardware in data centers in Switzerland, Germany, and Norway, at sites with biometric access control. No AWS, Google Cloud, or Microsoft Azure is used. The zero-access architecture ensures that not even Proton can decrypt the emails. Proton is ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II certified. The company is subject to Swiss law and not affected by the US CLOUD Act.

Can I use PGP with Proton Mail? +

Proton Mail uses PGP internally for end-to-end encryption between Proton users. External PGP keys can be imported to communicate encrypted with other PGP users outside of Proton. The web interface offers integrated key management, eliminating the need for manual key handling. For recipients without PGP or Proton, password-protected messages are available as an alternative.
