Frequently asked questions about Posteo
What is Posteo and what is it used for? +
Posteo is a German privacy-friendly email service from Berlin, founded in 2009. For a fixed price, Posteo offers email, calendar, address book, and notes. The platform supports IMAP/POP3, CalDAV/CardDAV, and PGP/S/MIME in the webmailer. Anonymous registration without personal data is possible, and payment data is strictly separated from the user account. Payment can also be made anonymously in cash by letter.
Does Posteo run on European infrastructure? +
Posteo operates servers in data centers in Frankfurt, Bielefeld, and Berlin (Germany). All hard drives are AES-encrypted, and all servers exclusively use open-source software. The service is powered 100 percent by renewable energy from Green Planet Energy (hydro and wind power from Austria and Germany). No AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure is used. Posteo is subject to the GDPR and the Telecommunications Act and has published annual transparency reports on government requests since 2014.
Can I use custom domains with Posteo? +
Posteo deliberately does not support custom domains. This design decision is intended to protect privacy and anonymity, as custom domains can be publicly attributed and thereby compromise user anonymity. Those who need custom domains can consider mailbox.org or Mail Infomaniak. Posteo instead offers up to 20 alias addresses under the posteo.de domain.
