Frequently asked questions about Proton Drive
What is Proton Drive and what is it used for? +
Proton Drive is an encrypted cloud storage service from Swiss provider Proton AG, based in Geneva. All files, filenames, and metadata are end-to-end encrypted before reaching Swiss data centers. The service includes automatic photo sync, collaborative work via Proton Docs and Proton Sheets, and apps for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and web. Proton Drive is part of the Proton ecosystem and can be used standalone or in the Unlimited bundle with Mail, VPN, Pass, and Calendar.
Does Proton Drive run on European infrastructure? +
Proton owns and operates its own hardware in data centers in Switzerland and Germany, with biometric access control. No AWS, Google Cloud, or Microsoft Azure is used. Server hard disks are fully encrypted. Proton is ISO 27001 certified and has completed a SOC 2 Type II audit. The company is subject to Swiss law and not affected by the US CLOUD Act.
Can I migrate from Google Drive to Proton Drive? +
A direct import function from Google Drive is available via Proton Easy Switch. Users can transfer their data automatically or use the desktop client for manual upload. Existing folder structures are preserved during import. Proton Docs also offers a compatible editor for Google Docs files, so the workflow remains largely the same after migration.
