Frequently asked questions about Mailfence
What is Mailfence and what is it used for? +
Mailfence is a Belgian encrypted email service from ContactOffice Group SA in Brussels, founded in 1999 as an online collaboration suite. The Mailfence service itself launched on November 12, 2013. The platform integrates email with OpenPGP encryption in the browser, calendar, document storage with online editing, and contact groups. Digital signatures and interoperability with any OpenPGP-capable system are built in.
Does Mailfence run on European infrastructure? +
Mailfence operates its entire server infrastructure in Belgium on its own controlled hardware. No cloud services from AWS, Google, or Microsoft are used for email storage. All server connections are TLS-encrypted (web, IMAP, POP, SMTP). Data access by authorities is only possible with a Belgian court order. The company is subject to Belgian and EU data protection law and fully GDPR-compliant.
Can I manage PGP keys in Mailfence? +
Mailfence integrates complete OpenPGP key management directly in the browser. Keys can be generated, imported, exported, or retrieved via public keyservers. This enables end-to-end encrypted communication with users of other PGP-capable email services. For recipients without PGP, Mailfence offers password-protected symmetrically encrypted messages as an alternative.
