Aleph Alpha The European alternative to OpenAI / Azure OpenAI

Aleph Alpha is a German AI company organised as a GmbH and headquartered in Heidelberg. Its main offering is the PhariaAI platform, which provides generative AI capabilities to enterprises, public administration and operators of critical infrastructure. The platform builds on the company's own language models in the Luminous and Pharia families, together with tools for retrieval, search and agent workflows. Typical use cases include knowledge management, regulated document processing and AI assistants in industry and government.

PhariaAI is designed for sovereign deployments. The platform can be installed in a customer's own data centre (on-premise), in a private cloud or in an environment operated by Aleph Alpha in Germany. There is no dependency on AWS, Google Cloud or Microsoft Azure, and integrations with European cloud providers such as StackIT are available. As a result, model weights, training data and user inputs stay within the infrastructure chosen by the customer.

ChatGPT and the OpenAI API are run as a multi-tenant service from the United States, whereas PhariaAI is built as a single-tenant and on-premise platform. Customers can run the full stack in their own environment, plug in custom models and keep both training and inference data under their own control. The focus is on regulated sectors such as public administration, defence, finance and healthcare, where data residency and auditability are central requirements. Aleph Alpha also publishes research on explainable models and auditing tools that complement the platform.
