Mistral AI The European alternative to OpenAI / Anthropic

Mistral AI is a French generative AI company headquartered in Paris, founded in 2023. It develops its own large language models, including Mistral Large, Mixtral and Magistral, and offers them through the La Plateforme API and the Le Chat assistant. Typical use cases include text generation, code assistance, translation, classification and agent workflows for developers, enterprises and public sector users. Several of its models are released as open weights, so they can also be run locally or in a customer's own environment.

La Plateforme and Le Chat are operated from European data centres, with a focus on France and Sweden. In parallel, Mistral has distribution partnerships with hyperscalers such as Microsoft Azure, where its models are available through Azure AI Foundry. Customers who require strictly European hosting can use La Plateforme directly or self-host the open-weight models in their own infrastructure. The commercial models are also offered for on-premise deployment.

The portfolio includes proprietary models such as Mistral Large and Magistral, plus open-weight models including Mistral 7B and the Mixtral series, which uses a mixture-of-experts architecture. There are also specialised models for code (Codestral), embeddings, vision and multimodal tasks. The open-weight models are published under Apache 2.0 or similar permissive licences and can be downloaded and fine-tuned freely. All models are accessible through La Plateforme via REST API, with features like function calling and structured JSON output.
