Shiftphone The European alternative to iPhone / Pixel

Shiftphone is a modular Android smartphone from German SHIFT GmbH, based in Falkenberg (Hesse), founded in 2014. Besides smartphones, the company also produces the SHIFTbook (notebook), the SHIFTscreen (OLED monitor), and SHIFTsound headphones. All devices are designed for repairability and modularity, using screws instead of adhesive. SHIFT is GWÖ-certified (Common Good Economy) and operates without external investors.

The devices are manufactured in China, not in Europe. Design, conception, software, support, and the modular design concept are developed at the Falkenberg site in northern Hesse. SHIFT set up its own factory in Hangzhou (China) together with the NGO TAOS in 2018 and operates production with fair wage standards and a transparent supply chain. Repair instructions are publicly available, and the device deposit model (22 euros) incentivizes return and recycling.

SHIFT forgoes profit extraction and invests surpluses in social and ecological projects. The supply chain is transparently documented, and production facilities operate with fair wage standards. On request, a deGoogled OS such as /e/OS or LineageOS can be installed. SHIFT received the German Sustainability Award and the Federal Ecodesign Award in 2025.
