What is HMD and what is it used for? +
HMD Global Oy is a Finnish smartphone company based in Espoo that sells Android smartphones and feature phones under the Nokia brand. HMD is the largest European smartphone manufacturer and offers devices across various price ranges. Since 2019, all consumer and corporate data has been stored and processed on HMD servers in Finland.
Is HMD / Nokia manufactured in Europe? +
HMD began manufacturing 5G smartphones in Europe in 2023. The Nokia XR21 was the first model assembled in Europe, with a manufacturing facility in Hungary. Components and materials continue to be sourced from China, but final assembly, calibration, and testing take place at a European partner. Manufacturing was previously entirely outsourced to Foxconn subsidiary FIH Mobile in China and India.
How does HMD differ from other Android manufacturers? +
HMD offers up to 4 years of security updates and uses Android One (near-stock Android) for its Nokia devices. All user data has been processed on servers in Finland since 2019, not in China or the USA. The European manufacturing of the XR21 specifically targets governments and enterprises with heightened security requirements.
