DeepL The European alternative to Google Translate

DeepL is a machine translation service operated by DeepL SE, headquartered in Cologne, Germany. It covers translation across more than 30 languages and is available as a web app, desktop and mobile apps and a REST API. With DeepL Pro, users can translate text and documents in formats such as DOCX, PPTX and PDF, and the DeepL Write tool offers style and grammar suggestions for English and German. The service is used by individuals as well as enterprises for internal communication, localisation and legal or technical translation.

DeepL runs the core translation systems on its own infrastructure in data centres located within the European Economic Area. The privacy policy states explicitly that translations for DeepL Pro customers are processed exclusively on this infrastructure. Hyperscalers such as AWS, Google Cloud or Microsoft Azure are not used for the translation engines, only ancillary services like CDN or payment processing rely on third parties. For Pro accounts, the entered texts are also not used to train or improve the translation models.

DeepL is a focused translation provider whose business model is built around translation and writing assistance, while Google Translate is part of a wider advertising and platform ecosystem. Translations for DeepL Pro customers remain on DeepL's own infrastructure inside the EEA and are processed under contractual GDPR terms. DeepL covers fewer languages than Google Translate but performs competitively in several independent benchmarks, especially for European language pairs and technical texts. Through its API and glossary features, the service can also be adapted to specific terminology and domains.
