Frequently asked questions about Home Assistant

What is Home Assistant and what is it used for? +

Home Assistant is an open-source smart home platform from the Open Home Foundation (non-profit, based in the USA and the Netherlands). The software integrates over 1,000 different devices and services (including Philips Hue, Shelly, IKEA Tradfri, Sonos, Z-Wave, ZigBee, Matter) and offers automations, energy management, and voice control (Assist). Companion apps are available for iOS and Android.

Does Home Assistant run on European infrastructure? +

Home Assistant works local-first: all device communication runs locally on a Raspberry Pi or server at the user's site, without mandatory cloud connection. Optionally, the Nabu Casa cloud service can be used for remote access, which is hosted in Germany (Cloudflare as CDN). Data is transmitted encrypted; Nabu Casa has no access to the content. The cloud service costs 7.50 euros per month.

What distinguishes Home Assistant from Amazon Alexa? +

Home Assistant works local-first without cloud requirement: voice commands and automations run offline on own hardware. Amazon Alexa requires the AWS cloud and sends all data to Amazon servers in the USA. Home Assistant is vendor-neutral with over 1,000 integrations, while Alexa is limited to Amazon devices and selected partners. Home Assistant requires more setup effort but offers significantly more flexibility.
