Shelly is a brand of Shelly Group SE (formerly Allterco Robotics) from Sofia, Bulgaria, founded in 2014. The company produces compact smart home modules for switches, dimmers, sensors, thermostats, and energy meters that are mounted behind existing switches and sockets. Supported protocols include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Matter, ZigBee, Z-Wave, LAN, and KNXnet/IP.
Is Shelly manufactured in Europe? +
Shelly Group SE is a Bulgarian EU company with subsidiaries in Germany, Slovenia, and Poland. Production capacity is being significantly expanded: from 800,000 to 1.5 million units per month (end of 2025) and up to 2 million units per month (2026). A fully automated factory for module production based on proprietary chips is being built in Plovdiv (Bulgaria). Shelly Group achieved unicorn status in 2025 (valuation over 1 billion US dollars).
Does Shelly require a cloud? +
No, all Shelly devices are fully usable locally. Via the Shelly app, they are configured in the local Wi-Fi, after which automations run locally via the integrated web services or via external systems such as Home Assistant, openHAB, or ioBroker. The optional Shelly Cloud enables remote access and is hosted in EU data centers. Shelly is GDPR-compliant and not subject to the US CLOUD Act.
