What is Ecosia and what is it used for? +

Ecosia is a German search engine operated by Ecosia GmbH, based in Berlin, founded in 2009. Around 80 percent of profits go to reforestation projects and climate protection. By April 2026, over 250 million trees had been planted in more than 35 countries. Since August 2025, Ecosia operates its own European search index called European Search Perspective (EUSP) together with Qwant. In addition to search, Ecosia offers its own Chromium-based browser for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS.

Does Ecosia run on European infrastructure? +

Ecosia's servers are located in Germany and, according to the provider, run on 200 percent renewable energy, with excess energy fed into the grid. Search queries are anonymized and deleted after 7 days. For search results, Ecosia uses a partnership with Microsoft Bing as well as its own European index EUSP since 2025. No user profiles are created and no data is sold to advertising networks.

What does Ecosia offer besides search? +

Ecosia offers its own Chromium-based browser (since April 2024) and Ecosia Chat (AI chatbot). The search engine publishes monthly financial reports for transparency. The business model is based on ads via Yahoo and Microsoft Advertising. Usage is free and no registration is required.
