What is Qwant and what is it used for? +

Qwant is a French search engine operated by Qwant SAS, based in Paris, founded in February 2013. Services include Qwant Lite and Qwant Junior (a child-friendly search engine for ages 6 to 12). The platform partially uses the Bing API and, since 2025, its own European search index called European Search Perspective (EUSP), a 50/50 joint venture with Ecosia. Apps for Android and iOS are available.

Does Qwant run on European infrastructure? +

Qwant SAS is based in Paris and processes all data in European data centers. Part of the indexing infrastructure was migrated to Microsoft Azure in 2019, while Qwant retains its own indexing capacity. As part of the EUSP joint venture with Ecosia, an independent European search index has been under development since 2025. Qwant does not set identification cookies and does not create user profiles.

How does Qwant differ from Google? +

Qwant does not track IP addresses and does not set identification cookies. Ads are based exclusively on the current search term, not on user profiles. Usage is free and the business model is based on non-personalized ads. Qwant is part of the EU-funded initiative for European search sovereignty.
