Frequently asked questions about OpenProject

What is OpenProject and what is it used for? +

OpenProject is open-source project management software from OpenProject GmbH in Berlin. The platform supports classical, agile (Scrum, Kanban), and hybrid project methods with features such as Gantt charts, Team Planner, time tracking, cost control, and wiki. OpenProject is available as Enterprise Cloud or self-hosted. The code is open source under GNU GPL v3. Users include government agencies and companies with high compliance requirements.

Does OpenProject run on European infrastructure? +

OpenProject's Enterprise Cloud has been hosted exclusively at Scaleway (France, EU provider) since March 2026. Previously, AWS in Frankfurt was also used. All hosting infrastructure and sub-processors are located in the EU. The self-hosted variant runs entirely under customer control on any infrastructure. OpenProject is subject to German and EU data protection law and not subject to the US CLOUD Act.

Is OpenProject suitable as a Jira replacement? +

OpenProject explicitly positions itself as an "exit solution for Jira" and offers comparable functions such as backlogs, sprints, boards, and roadmaps. With the announced end of Jira Data Center in 2029, OpenProject becomes interesting as a self-hosted alternative or GDPR-compliant cloud variant. An import function for Jira data is available. The Community Edition is permanently free as self-hosted open-source software.
