Frequently asked questions about Snapkin

What is Snapkin and what is it used for? +

Snapkin is a calorie tracker for iOS and Android from Robot Studios IT Consultancy BV in Berlaar, Belgium. Users take a photo of their meal, and the app identifies the food and estimates the portions from the plate and cutlery, including cooking fat and sauces. When a single detail would change the estimate, the app asks a follow-up question. Frequent meals can be repeated without a new photo, and the app also estimates dishes from restaurant menus. After one month, Snapkin adjusts the target based on logged intake and weight from Apple Health or Health Connect.

Does Snapkin run on European infrastructure? +

Only partly. According to the privacy policy, data is stored at DigitalOcean in Amsterdam, and error reports go to Laravel Nightwatch with storage in Frankfurt. The analysis of meal photos, however, runs in the USA: Snapkin sends the photo, depth measurements, diet and learned notes via OpenRouter to models from Google and OpenAI, without name, email address, age or height. For nightly habit learning, the previous day's meals are sent to OpenAI as text without photos and kept there for up to 30 days. The transfer is based on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses. Further services named are TypeSafe, Cloudflare, Slack, Apple and Google for payments, sign-in and push notifications, and Firebase for push notifications on Android.

How does Snapkin handle health data? +

The privacy policy classifies weight, body details and diet as health data and processes them on the basis of explicit consent under Art. 9(2)(a) GDPR. According to the provider, the app contains no analytics tools and no tracking; only its own ad campaigns are measured server-side. The learned kitchen profile can be viewed and deleted by users. Data can be exported, and the account can be deleted directly in the app.
