Frequently asked questions about Counted
What is Counted and what is it used for? +
Counted is an app for splitting shared expenses, for example on trips, in flat shares or for group gifts. A project is created with a name, a currency and participants and shared via a link, with no account required. Expenses can be split equally, by shares or by exact amounts, and the app then proposes the fewest transfers needed to settle up. It also offers recurring expenses, statistics, monthly budgets per category and a change history. Counted is available as a web app and for Android and iOS, and it can also be used offline.
Does Counted run on European infrastructure? +
According to the privacy policy, servers and database are hosted by Hetzner in Germany, and transactional email is sent by Scaleway from France. Encrypted backups go to Proton in Switzerland, and Proton does not hold the key. Infrastructure metrics and daily totals run through Grafana Labs in its EU region, without content or IP addresses. Push notifications use Apple and, on Android, Google FCM or a chosen UnifiedPush distributor, and these services may process data outside the EU. Their content is kept generic or encrypted. The server stores some data in the clear, including email addresses, project memberships and timestamps.
Is the source code of Counted open? +
The source code of the web and mobile clients is published on GitHub under the AGPL-3.0 license. This does not apply to the backend, database and deployment, which remain private. According to its description, the repository is a mirror into which no pull requests are merged. It includes instructions for rebuilding the WASM bundle served by the website and for verifying its signature. The Android app is also available through F-Droid.
