Bunq is a Dutch direct bank from Amsterdam, founded in 2012. The app bank offers a current account with customizable cards, up to 25 sub-accounts, stock and crypto investing, travel benefits (eSIM, roaming savings), and a high-yield savings account. Bunq holds a banking license from the Dutch Central Bank (DNB) and is available throughout the EU.
Does Bunq run on European infrastructure? +
Bunq is a Dutch bank with a DNB banking license, subject to GDPR and EU banking law. The entire infrastructure was migrated to AWS (Amazon Web Services) in Frankfurt (EU). All data is encrypted (at rest and in transit). AWS CloudHSM is used for card payment keys. Deposits are protected via the Dutch Deposit Guarantee Scheme (DGS) up to 100,000 euros per customer. AWS, as a US service, is subject to the CLOUD Act.
What makes Bunq sustainable? +
Bunq plants a tree for every 100 euros of card spending. By 2026, over 22 million trees were planted, primarily in Madagascar in cooperation with Eden Reforestation Projects. The sustainability program (formerly Easy Green) is now part of all paid plans. Bunq positions itself as a sustainable European bank.
