Speeku The European alternative to Duolingo

Speeku is a language learning app from Data Stand AI GmbH in Zurich for Android and iOS. It teaches everyday language in regional varieties, meaning the Portuguese spoken in Portugal rather than the Brazilian variety. The course comprises over 1,000 short lessons of around eleven exercises each, plus culture lessons. It also includes an offline dictionary and automatically generated flashcards that first review the words most likely to be forgotten. The free version offers four new lessons every week, and reviewing remains possible after that.

The app needs no servers for learning, as lessons, dictionary and speech checking run on the device. The speech model and course audio are downloaded via the app store or a file host whose operator the provider does not name. Purchases go through Google Play or the Apple App Store, and Speeku receives only the sales record. According to the cookie page, the app contains no analytics, and the Android version does not request internet permission. After consent, the website uses Google Analytics 4, also to measure Google Ads campaigns, and according to the privacy policy data may be transferred to Google servers outside Switzerland and the EEA. The provider does not name the website's host, which according to the response headers is Vercel, a US provider.

European Portuguese is currently available as a separate app for Android and iOS. Swiss German has been announced on the website, where its apps are marked as coming soon, and the provider gives no date. Each language is offered as its own course, and the one-time purchase applies per course. The Portuguese course uses 61 exercise types, including picture choice, sentence building, gap filling, role-play and verb tables. The speech check verifies whether the expected word was said and does not grade the accent.
