Frequently asked questions about Tresorit
What is Tresorit and what is it used for? +
Tresorit is an end-to-end encrypted cloud storage with headquarters in Zurich (Switzerland) and offices in Munich and Budapest. The platform primarily targets business customers with compliance requirements and offers secure data rooms, integrated digital signing (eSign), encrypted email attachments, and granular permissions. Tresorit is certified for HIPAA, CCPA, CJIS, DORA, FINRA, ITAR, NIS2, and TISAX. Since July 2021, Swiss Post holds a majority stake in Tresorit. Integrations exist for Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, and Outlook.
Does Tresorit run on European infrastructure? +
Tresorit uses Microsoft Azure as its infrastructure provider. This means the servers can be physically located in Europe (default is Ireland, optionally Switzerland, Germany, France, Netherlands, or UK), but the cloud provider is Microsoft, a US company. For Business and Enterprise customers, twelve data center locations are available, including several in the EU. The zero-knowledge encryption ensures that neither Tresorit nor Microsoft can decrypt the contents. Tresorit itself is a Swiss company and subject to Swiss data protection law.
Is Tresorit suitable for regulated industries? +
Tresorit is specifically designed for regulated industries such as legal, healthcare, and finance. Certifications (HIPAA, ITAR, FINRA, TISAX, NIS2, DORA) enable use in law firms, hospitals, and financial institutions. Features such as file tracking, watermarks, access revocation, and encrypted data rooms are tailored to these requirements. Data residency in the EU or Switzerland can be guaranteed, and end-to-end encryption meets the requirements of NIS2 and DORA.
