Frequently asked questions about Koofr
What is Koofr and what is it used for? +
Koofr is a Slovenian cloud storage service that functions as an aggregator and can combine multiple cloud accounts (Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive) into a single interface. Features include online office editing via Office for the web, secure share links with expiry dates, and Koofr Vault for client-side zero-knowledge encryption. The service offers a permanent 10 GB free tier and plans up to 20 TB. Apps are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android.
Does Koofr run on European infrastructure? +
Koofr operates its servers in ISO 27001 certified data centers in Germany. These data centers are powered entirely by renewable energy (wind and hydropower) and use only air for cooling. The company is based in Slovenia, which is an EU member, and is subject to the GDPR. According to its own statements, Koofr does not scan files and retains no hidden copies of deleted data. Whether proprietary hardware or a European hoster is used is not publicly documented.
What is Koofr Vault? +
Koofr Vault is an integrated feature for client-side zero-knowledge encryption that can be used within existing Koofr storage. The encryption is based on rclone-crypt and can be decrypted with standard tools, preventing vendor lock-in. Vault is included free in all plans, including the free tier with 10 GB. Files in the Vault folder are unreadable on the server, even if the Koofr account were compromised.
