Jottacloud The European alternative to iCloud

Jottacloud is a Norwegian cloud storage service based in Stavanger, founded in 2008. The service offers backups, photo sync, and file sharing and is one of the few providers with unlimited storage for private users. An AI-powered photo search, version history, and an archive for rarely used files are part of the feature set. In 2024, Jottacloud merged with Telenor Software Lab (Min Sky) and has since served around 3 million users in Scandinavia.

Jottacloud owns and operates 100 percent of its infrastructure in Norway. The data center is located in a former NATO ammunition depot near Stavanger, deep inside a mountain, protected by layers of concrete and rock. The servers are powered by Norwegian hydropower and cooled with naturally cold seawater. No AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure is used, and data goes exclusively to Jottacloud's own servers. Norway applies the GDPR but is not an EU member.

The Unlimited plan for private single users does offer truly unlimited storage with no bandwidth restrictions. For very high data volumes above 5 TB, a speed limit clause applies to ensure fair sharing of infrastructure. For commercial use, the Pro plan with a fixed limit is intended. Jottacloud supports automatic backups from multiple devices simultaneously, making the unlimited storage particularly relevant for families and photographers.
