bewCloud The European alternative to Nextcloud / Google Drive

bewCloud is an open-source cloud platform written in TypeScript and Deno and positions itself as a lean alternative to Nextcloud and ownCloud. Features include file storage with WebDAV access, notes, a photo gallery, calendar (CalDAV), contacts (CardDAV), an RSS reader, and a simple expense tracker. The source code is available on GitHub under the AGPL. Users can self-host bewCloud or get a managed instance from the project.

According to the provider, the officially offered managed variant runs on a dedicated VPS in an EU data center with daily backups retained for 7 days. The specific subprocessors are not detailed on the public pages. With self-hosting, the operator chooses the location. AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure are not used as default dependencies.

bewCloud deliberately avoids the broad feature set of Nextcloud and focuses on a few frequently used core applications. The stack is built on TypeScript and Deno instead of PHP, and idle resource usage is significantly lower. Nextcloud offers a much larger app ecosystem with an office suite and Talk, while bewCloud focuses on simple, fast use with minimal maintenance. Both projects are open source.
