Frequently asked questions about Beebeeb

What is Beebeeb and what is it used for? +

Beebeeb is end-to-end encrypted cloud storage from Initlabs B.V. in Wijchen, the Netherlands, launched in 2026 and funded without venture capital. Files are encrypted on the device before upload, and the provider stores only ciphertext. The service offers share links with expiry dates, file requests and the export of all data as an encrypted archive. It can be used via the web app, a command-line tool and desktop apps for Windows and macOS, which are still in beta. A Linux desktop app and an Android app are not yet available, the iOS app is in TestFlight, and a Teams plan has been announced.

Does Beebeeb run on European infrastructure? +

Yes, according to the sub-processor list, infrastructure, hosting and encrypted backups are at Hetzner Online GmbH in Germany and Finland. Payments are handled by Mollie B.V. from the Netherlands. Stripe Payments Europe was used until 30 August 2026, and the legacy path was disabled on 24 September 2026. Email, support, accounting and analytics with Matomo are self-operated within the EEA according to the company. Card payments involve card networks outside the EEA, which the privacy policy states explicitly. AWS, Google Cloud and Azure are not on the list.

How does encryption work at Beebeeb? +

Files are encrypted on the device with AES-256-GCM. The master key is derived from a 12-word recovery phrase and unlocked locally by the password, and neither the password nor the key reaches the servers. If both the password and the phrase are lost, the data cannot be recovered. Sign-in uses the OPAQUE protocol, and the key for share links sits in the URL fragment and is not sent to the server. The code of the clients and the encryption core is available under AGPL-3.0 on GitHub, while the server is not public. According to the company, there has not yet been an external audit of the cryptography.
