PeerTube is a decentralized, open-source video platform from the French non-profit organization Framasoft in Lyon, developed since 2017. The software is based on ActivityPub (same protocol as Mastodon) and WebRTC for peer-to-peer streaming. PeerTube is free software (AGPL-3.0) and is operated in a decentralized manner on hundreds of independent instances, each using their own servers. The infrastructure depends on the respective instance operator. The reference instance framatube.org is operated by Framasoft in France. With EU hosting and correct configuration, PeerTube runs without tracking, without advertising, and without profiling. Framasoft is funded 94 percent through donations and is independent of commercial cloud providers.

How does PeerTube differ from YouTube? +

PeerTube is decentralized and federated: there is no central server, but many autonomous instances that can follow each other and share content. There is no algorithmic recommendation engine, no advertising, and no tracking. Moderation takes place at the instance level, not by a single corporation. When watching popular videos, the load is distributed via peer-to-peer across viewers, reducing the server bandwidth requirements for the operator.
