Veridonia The European alternative to Reddit

Veridonia is a community platform for European news from Astraplex Technologies, Lda in Portugal. The main Europe feed contains mostly English-language news that members share as links or write themselves. Anyone can also start communities on other subjects, whose rules can be changed by vote. The service is in beta and, according to the website, is run by a small, self-funded Ukrainian team. Reading is possible without an account, and a minimum age of 16 applies to posting, voting and commenting.

According to the privacy policy, servers, databases, media storage and outgoing email run on Amazon Web Services, a US provider, in the Ireland region (eu-west-1). Public images are delivered by Amazon CloudFront from edge locations closer to users. App notifications and app updates use Expo from 650 Industries, Inc. in the US, with delivery by Apple Push Notification service and Google Firebase Cloud Messaging. Mailboxes are hosted on Google Workspace, and embedded videos play through YouTube in privacy-enhanced mode. Sign-in is also possible through Google, Apple, Facebook or Reddit, which then process it under their own policies. According to its own statement, Veridonia uses no analytics or advertising cookies.

A randomly drawn panel of reachable members answers one fixed question, namely whether most people in the community would find the post worth seeing. A simple majority of the votes cast decides, every vote counts equally, and a tie does not publish. Answers stay hidden until the vote closes, after which the decision can be read publicly. Members whose answer matches the result gain rating, which in turn affects what a member may be drawn for. If nobody can be reached, the post appears at once with a note on its decision page.
