Frequently asked questions about Mimiri Notes

What is Mimiri Notes and what is it used for? +

Mimiri Notes is an encrypted note-taking app from innonova GmbH in Switzerland. Notes are organised in a tree structure, and every note can hold both content and further sub-notes. Single notes or whole branches can be shared with other users, and changes are synchronised automatically. It also offers unlimited version history, a recycle bin and offline access through a local copy on the device. Apps are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, along with a web app. According to the FAQ, sign-up only requires a username and password, no email address.

Does Mimiri Notes run on European infrastructure? +

According to the terms of service and privacy policy, innonova GmbH stores user data exclusively in Switzerland and/or the EU. The website does not name the hosting provider. Note content and titles are encrypted on the device before transfer, and the provider states that it has no access to them. The only external recipient named in the privacy policy is the Swiss payment provider Payrexx, which receives name, address and email for subscriptions only. According to the privacy policy, Mimiri uses no third-party tracking tools, and the website records anonymous page views without cookies or tracking IDs.

How does Mimiri Notes encrypt notes? +

All data is encrypted on the device with AES-GCM-256 before it leaves. The key is derived from the password with PBKDF2-SHA512 and 300,000 iterations, and according to the security page the password itself never leaves the device. Sign-in uses a challenge-response scheme with HMAC-SHA512, and later requests are signed. If the password is lost, the provider cannot reset it or recover the notes. The source code of client and server is published on GitHub under GPLv2. The security page does not mention an external security audit.
