Vaultwarden is an alternative server implementation of the Bitwarden client API written in Rust. The open-source project is available on GitHub under the AGPL-3.0 license and is significantly more resource-efficient than the official Bitwarden server. Vaultwarden is fully compatible with the official Bitwarden apps for browser, desktop, mobile, and CLI. All premium features such as YubiKey, Duo, and Emergency Access are available without additional license costs.

Does Vaultwarden run on European infrastructure? +

Vaultwarden is a purely self-hosted solution and runs exclusively on the operator's own infrastructure. The software can be run on a dedicated server, a Raspberry Pi, or a European VPS, for example from Hetzner, IONOS, or OVHcloud. Since no data is transmitted to external services, full control over the storage location remains with the operator. GDPR compliance depends on the correct configuration of the hosting (HTTPS, EU location).

Can I use official Bitwarden apps with Vaultwarden? +

Yes, Vaultwarden is fully compatible with the official Bitwarden clients for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. In the app configuration, only the server URL needs to be changed to the own Vaultwarden instance. The software also supports organizations, collections, and secure sharing of credentials within teams.
