Threema is a Swiss messenger from Threema GmbH in Pfäffikon (Canton Schwyz), founded in 2012. The app offers end-to-end encrypted messages, voice and video calls, group chats, polls, and file sharing. Threema can be used without a phone number (anonymous ID). The app is open source (AGPLv3) and available for iOS, Android, and desktop.
Does Threema run on European infrastructure? +
Threema operates its own servers in two high-security data centers in the Zurich area (Switzerland), ISO 27001 certified. Threema deliberately does not use cloud services from US technology companies such as AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure. The servers feature biometric access controls, video surveillance, emergency power supply, and redundant internet connectivity. For companies, Threema OnPrem offers a self-hosted variant.
