Frequently asked questions about Nhost
What is Nhost and what is it used for? +
Nhost is a backend-as-a-service platform from Nhost AB in Sweden. Developers get a Postgres database for which a GraphQL API with real-time features is provided automatically. It also includes authentication, file storage, serverless functions and the option to run custom containers. Development happens locally via a CLI, and deployments run through Git. Nhost is mainly used as a backend for web and mobile apps.
Does Nhost run on European infrastructure? +
According to its website, Nhost Cloud offers six regions on four continents, including a region named eu-central-1. In a blog post, Nhost states that it migrated the platform from DigitalOcean to Amazon Web Services (AWS). The hosted version therefore runs on the infrastructure of a US provider, even though an EU region can be selected. According to the privacy policy, transfers outside the EEA are only intended for storage purposes and based on an adequacy decision or appropriate safeguards. Users who need full control over the location can self-host the open-source stack.
Is Nhost open source? +
Yes, the Nhost source code is published on GitHub under the MIT license. The project describes itself there as an open-source Firebase alternative with GraphQL. Besides the hosted service Nhost Cloud, the stack can therefore in principle also be run on your own infrastructure. The hosted service offers a free Starter plan for one project, which is paused after one week of inactivity.
