Frequently asked questions about Wolkesicher
What is Wolkesicher and what is it used for? +
Wolkesicher is a German hosting service for the open-source software Nextcloud Community Edition. The cloud is provided ready to use, and the provider takes care of updates and maintenance. It is used to store and share files, manage calendars and contacts, and edit documents together. The Premium packages are aimed at private customers, associations, the self-employed and freelancers, while the Business packages are aimed at companies. Access is available via web browser, WebDAV and apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. The service is independent and has no connection to Nextcloud GmbH.
Does Wolkesicher run on European infrastructure? +
According to the website, the servers are located in data centres in Germany that are ISO 27001 certified and run on renewable energy. The website does not name the data centre operators. When the home page was loaded without cookie consent on 30 October 2026, only resources from its own domain were requested, including Matomo from its own subdomain. The privacy policy dated 15 February 2024, however, contains general passages on Google Analytics, Google Ads, Google Fonts, Facebook Pixel and social media plugins. It names PayPal (Europe) as a payment service.
How does Wolkesicher back up data in the cloud? +
In the Premium and Business packages with cluster storage, Wolkesicher creates a snapshot of the data directory and a database dump once a day. The snapshots are kept for up to seven days and can be downloaded via the CloudConsole. The provider describes them as technical restore points and not as a backup in the legal sense, and there is no entitlement to restoring specific data states. Backing up data remains the customer's responsibility. Backups with retention of up to ten years are available separately. The downloaded data can also be used to switch providers or run an own instance.
